What even is keyword research you may ask, or more to the point what is SEO?
Let’s start with SEO or search engine optimisation.
SEO is a set of rules that should be followed by website (or blog) owners to optimise their websites for search engines to improve their search engine rankings.
In addition to this, we see it as a great way to increase the quality of your website by making it more user-friendly, faster and easier to navigate.
But why is SEO so important?
In today’s competitive marketplace, effective SEO marketing is more important than it has ever been. Search engines serve millions of users per day looking for answers to their questions or for solutions to their problems.
Having professional SEO on your website is essential because:
- The majority of visitors are more likely to click on one of the top 5 suggestions in the Google results. So to take full advantage of this and therefore gain more visitors to your web site or your online store, you need to in the top positions for Google rankings.
- Visitors trust search engines and having a presence in the top positions for the keywords the user is searching for, increases the web site’s trust.
- SEO can put you ahead of the competition, which means your site will get found first. If you and a competitors website are selling the same thing, your website being fully optimised by us to search engines, is more likely to rank higher in the Google results and therefore gain more visitors.
What is Keyword Research and why it is the first step to effective SEO.
Keyword research is the work we do to come up with an extensive list of keywords that we know your site will rank high for.
We then apply a keyword strategy, which is about the decisions we make on the basis of the keyword research.
We then look at the ‘key phrases’, which are keywords containing multiple words. Don’g get confused thinking the term keyword means just using a single word as keywords can be more than one word.
For instance, ‘used Case tractor’ is a keyword, as is ‘tractor cab door’. Keywords usually consist of multiple words!
Before we write your website contents, we need to think about which search terms you want to be found for and this means getting inside your customers heads to find out which words they use when searching.
Then we can use these exact terms in your content so that you start ranking highly for them. This is called ‘keyword research’.
Proper keyword research is important because it will make it clear to us which search terms your audience will use to find your website and products.
It doesn’t make any sense to optimise your website for words that your site visitors don’t use.
Good keyword research makes sure that we use the same words as your target audience would use and this makes the whole effort of optimising your website more worthwhile and will bring in far more visitors to your site.
What is an effective keyword strategy?
For us this starts with some research into your business. For instance, who are you? What do you do? What products do you sell? What makes your company special?
This will help us to do far more effective keyword research by creating a list of your keywords.
We then have to get inside the head of your visitors. For instance, what will these people be looking for? What kind of search terms could they be using while looking for your products or services?
Up until a few years ago you could just check Google Analytics for this and see the terms people used to find your website.
But unfortunately that’s no longer possible. So for us that’s where our experience of the industry will help us to determine which terms people will use in search engines to end up at your website.
We then use some pretty clever keyword research tools to find our which are the best keywords to use for all your site pages and products.
We can see how effective each keyword is, how many people search for these keywords and how difficult it can be to be found by using this keywords.
Keyword research should be the start of any long term sustainable SEO strategy.
The result of this will be a long list of keywords for which you’ll more likely be found by.
But the hardest part is still ahead! Writing all that content to put the keyword research to best use.
You should write your page content, news articles and product descriptions on every single keyword you would like to be found for.
